enke: Make Your Mark (enke) is a youth leadership development organization that generates and incubates youth-led social impact projects. We focus on developing the skills of youth to increase their effectiveness as leaders and their ability to contribute to a positive future. We are seeking to appoint a CHIEF OPERATIONS OFFICER.

Opportunity closing date: 19th April 2017

Start date: 3rd July at the latest

Contract: Minimum 3 year commitment

Role: Full time, in Braamfontein, Johannesburg with travel as required. Overtime / weekend work will be expected.


The Chief Operations Officer will be based at our head offices in Johannesburg and will  lead the Operations arm to deliver on the strategic vision of the organisation. This will involve being responsible for the Finance and Human Resource functions while managing organisational administration and working with the leadership team to operationalise strategy. The Chief Operations Officer reports to the CEO and the Board of Directors. The COO will also work closely with the Chief Programs Officer, directly manage the Office Coordinator and is responsible for ensuring that the whole enke team is supported through effective HR processes.

We are looking for a highly organised and decisive senior manager with solid financial and operations management skills and the ability to manage staff. Candidates for this exciting and challenging position must have 3-5 years of experience in increasingly responsible operations and financial management positions. Experience of financial administration and budget management in a donor-funded environment is essential, especially working with international grants and contracts. This individual should also have experience with H.R. management, familiarity with general management and leading high performing teams.

The COO needs to have the personal skills to coach and manage team members to achieve their potential. Other essential abilities include: excellent writing skills, excellent MS Excel skills, high levels of computer literacy, advanced financial management, resource development, human resources management, capacity building and stakeholder engagement. Experience in growing or scaling an organisation is an added bonus.


  • Financial Management
    • Financial strategy – working with the board and senior team members to craft strategy and design the processes that facilitate its execution
    • Prepare and manage the organisation’s long and medium term budgets. Including Working closely with department heads to manage departmental budgets
    • Donor finance – working with the income generation team on fundraising/project budgets and reports while ensuring compliance with funder guidelines
    • Forecast and manage the organisation’s financial position while providing periodic reports
    • Overseeing, developing, implementing and updating of policies and procedure
    • Managing the external bookkeepers to ensure SARS compliance,  monthly financial reconciliation and capturing of accurate monthly management accounts
    • Manage external auditors to ensure receipt of annual unqualified audit
    • Ensuring financial compliance with all relevant financial, secretarial and governance guidelines
  • Human Resources
    • Managing the Human Resource function by mapping and tailoring the employee life cycle towards facilitating a high performance culture that is consistent with the organisations values
    • Recruitment & hiring – driving the recruitment process to ensure that the organisation’s staffing needs are met.
    • Retention – working with the CEO to manage unwanted organisational turnover by monitoring team happiness and pursuing opportunities for employee development and team building
    • Performance management – working with the CEO and CPO to ensure that the team is meeting or exceeding performance targets
    • HR policies and procedures – developing and implementation of policies and procedures. Ensuring organisational compliance when handling matters such as dismissal, grievances, discipline, etc.
    • Compliance – ensuring organisational compliance with the Department of Labour, Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, the Unemployment Insurance Fund and other relevant bodies
    • Build organisation and staff capacity, and processes that ensure the organization runs smoothly
  • Team Management
    • Manage Office Coordinator and ensure office is administered profficiently
    • HR Director for the organisation, supporting all team members through an open-door policy (coaching, mentoring, developing individuals)



  • 3-5 years in a Senior Management position
  • Solid educational background – minimum of Undergraduate degree in a relevant field required
  • Proven track record of successfully leading a Finance function in a non-profit/social enterprise including experience with donor financial management and non-profit statutory compliance (CIPC, SARS, COIDA, etc)
  • Exposure to (ideally experience leading) the Human Resource function
  • General management – thorough understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing
  • Leadership and capacity building – ability to effectively build organisation and staff capacity, developing an exceptional team of varied experience and the processes that ensure organisational effectiveness
  • Experience of contributing to organisational strategy and implementing strategy through operational plans and tactics
  • A track record of building and mobilising their network
  • A deep passion for social impact
