Kathlego: Sharing the gift of numbers
Name: Katlego Chabalala
Community issue: Education
Hometown: Tafelkop, Limpopo
Katlego has always enjoyed Mathematics as a subject in school, however, in 2012 he realised that other learners at his school didn’t share the same sentiment as him and were struggling with the subject. Attending the 2012 Johannesburg enke: Forum empowered Katlego to do something about this and he decided to start a peer-to-peer mentoring club, as part of his Community Action Project. As a then Grade 11 student he offered Grade 10 learners’ at his school tutoring in Mathematics from Monday to Thursday to twenty five learners.
Not only did school’s teachers note a big improvement in the Math’s scores of the Grade 10 learners who participated in Katlego’s tutoring sessions, but Katlego also observed that students who participated in his mentoring club were less likely to engage in high-risk activities after school.
