Program Opportunity: 2020 Trailblazer Program Applications Open!

We are excited to share that online applications for the 2020 enke: Trailblazer Program are now open! We’ve had to make a few changes due to COVID-19 and are very excited to implement our new community-based Trailblazer Program, which will be open to Grade 9-11 high school youth in selected areas in Limpopo, Free State, Gauteng, and Northern Cape.

About the 2020-21 Trailblazer Program

2020 is like no other year, and so, we have revised the Trailblazer Program to be like no other that we have run before, making sure that we are adhering to ongoing COVID-19 travel and gathering restrictions to protect our collective health and well-being. Our community-based Trailblazer Program will be running from 26 September 2020 – 30 March 2021 in the following areas:

  • Limpopo: Blouberg Local Municipality
  • Free State: Parys, Vredefort, Viljoenskroon
  • Gauteng: Dobsonville and Hammanskraal
  • Northern Cape: De Aar, Britstown, Hanover and Phillipstown
  • Youth from all across South Africa may apply, however those from the above-outlined areas will be prioritised.

Through the Trailblazer Program, youth don’t just learn how to make a difference in their community, they will also learn key skills and practice leading a project, which may help them in the future. Participants walk away from the Trailblazer Program experience inspired to make change happen, not only in their school but wherever they find themselves.

The 2020 enke: Trailblazer Program has 3 parts that take place over 6 months:

  1. Training at the enke: Community Forum Workshops (September- October 2020): the official kick-off of the Trailblazer Program. These workshops will take place in the community or at the school. The one-day workshops will take place on Saturdays from 26 September – 24 October 2020 (dates are subject to change; venues and dates to be confirmed later in September 2020).
  2. Action and project incubation for a Community Action Project (October 2020- February 2021): Trailblazers commit to implementing projects and attending online workshops facilitated by enke Champions. The 6 months’ program includes incubation of an educational focus project that will contribute to ensuring access to education in their school/community. The Trailblazers will participate in online workshops that be held through an online platform with materials shared on WhatsApp. This will be in partnership with the respective schools and parents to ensure that the participants have the necessary resources.
  3. Recognition at the Trailblazer Celebration Event (March): at the end of the 6 months we will have a recognition event to celebrate the work done by the Trailblazers.

With the current pandemic (Covid-19) we have had to adjust our program to ensure the safety of the participants. As a result, the training for the program will be a combination of one-day in-person workshops and the rest of training will be online. There will be designated enke representatives called Trailblazer Champions who will be based in the target communities, delivering training and providing support throughout the 6-month program. During in-person workshops, all Program Participants and trainers will be provided with a face-mask and access to sanitiser, as well as observing social distancing for the safety of all persons.

As the majority of the 2020 program will be conducted online, it is essential that the prospective participant have the following:

  • A Smartphone to access all the online material. If a participant does not have a smartphone they should ensure that they have someone who has one to assist them (i.e. parent, teacher, friend etc.)
  • An active cellphone number to where data will be sent to (enke will be providing monthly data to the participants so that they can access the online materials).
