Thato: Planting seeds of hope

Thato lives in an informal settlement in Orange Farm and noted that there were no positive role models in his community and that the unemployed youth in his community often ended up being victims of crime and substance abuse, due to the high level of poverty.

Thato’s community action project seeks to change the mindset of young people in his community by hosting motivation sessions on Saturdays  in the form of  planting vegetable gardens. This 2013 Trailblazer has inspired a following of unemployed young people from within his community and hopes that having them participate in the implementation and maintenance of vegetable gardens will not only distract them from participating in high risk activities, but will also provide them with an additional skills set.
